천재 프로듀서 Greg Wells

이번에 학교에서 프로듀서를 리서치 하는 프리젠테이션을 준비하면서

마침 우리학교에서 출신이고 직접 눈앞에서 클리닉을 하는것도 보았었던 인연으로

Greg Wells를 리서치 해보았다.

결과는 참혹했다.

뭐 이런놈이 다 있나 정도..?

무슨말인가 하면.. 지금부터 시작해 보겠다.

캐나다 Peterborough 출생.

일단 출생 연도는 대략 1968년생.. 인터넷에 정보가 나와있지 않으나, 나의 기타 선생님과 같이 학교를 다녔다고 하니 대략 그정도.

어릴때부터 피아노와 드럼을 치기 시작. Humber College에 입학 (졸업을 했는지는 모르겠음)

89년도부터 Kim Mitchell의 밴드에서 키보드 플레이어로 활동을 하다가 21세에 나이에

Prince의 스트링 어레인저인 Claire Fisher와 공부하기 위해 무작정 LA로 출발.

배움을 시작한지 불과 몇개월 되지 않아서 이미 그 스승이 일을 맡길정도로 엄청난 재능을 보이며 부상한다. 여러 세션활동과 어레인저 활동을 하다 K.D.LANG의 밴드에 들어가서 2년동안 전세계 투어를 한다. 그후 유럽에서 Carole King과 Mark Hudson을 만나 Celin Dion의 타이타닉 주제곡 앨범에 수록된 "The Reason" 이란 곡을 co-write하게 되면서 스타 작곡가 반열에 올라버리게 된다. 그 앨범은 전세계에서 3천1만장이 팔렸으며 (..로열티..) 프로듀서는 그 유명한.. George Martin 이였다. 

그 이후로는 세션맨과 song-writer로 활동하며 커리어를 쌓다가 프로듀서/엔지니어 까지 하게 되는데 그의 업적을 대충 나열해 본다면

위의 리스트는 그가 참여한 모든 앨범이 나열되어 있는것도 아니다.

리스트에 나와있는것중 가장 어이가 없는건, multiple-instruments라던가

all instrument를 쓴다는 것이다.

한 사람이 악기를 연습해서 세션맨으로 살아남는게 얼마나 어려운가,

그는 한 악기도 아니고..

기타,보컬,베이스,드럼,키보드,피아노,퍼커션,바이브라폰 등등..

거의 모든 악기를 프로페셔널 레벨로 연주한다는 말도 안되는 일이..

더 말도 안되는건 

엔지니어도 한다는 것이다.

악기 연주를 위한 음악과

믹싱 엔지니어로 써의 음향은 또 완전히 다른 세상이다.

실용음악과를 4년가고 연주를 할때

엔지니어들은 음향쪽으로 수년/수십년을 공부하는 만큼

두 분야를 같이 한다는건 정말 말도안되는 일이다.

이미 수많은 악기를 다룰줄 말도안되니즘을 탑재하고 프로듀서겸 엔지니어까지..

하는 그는 정말 천재다.

연주자로써 더 충격적이였던건

재즈학교를 몇년 다녔다고는 하나 이미 대부분을 팝/롹 세션플레이어로 살아온 그가

우리학교에서 클리닉을 할때 보여주었던 improvisation 과 재즈연주는..

한 장르도 제대로 하기 어렵다는 법칙을 처참하게 깨어버리는 큰 예였다.

자.. 

모두 음악 그만두.. 열심히 하자.
